Submitting unverified PCB design files to a manufacturing plant often results in costly board spins, solder bridges, or missing component footprints. Following an engineering checklist ensures your printed circuit board passes Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design Rule Checks (DRC) on the first run.
1. Schematic Capture & ERC (Electrical Rule Check)
Run schematic ERC to confirm zero floating input pins, unassigned nets, or power pin conflicts. Verify component MPNs against authorized distributor stock (DigiKey, Mouser, LCSC) to prevent end-of-life component sourcing delays.
2. Footprint & Mechanical Verification
Cross-check 1:1 physical land pattern sizes against datasheet component packages. Confirm mounting hole locations, board outline dimensions, and connector edge clearances fit target enclosures.
3. DFM, Trace Widths & Gerber File Generation
Run automated DFM checks for minimum trace width (e.g., 6 mil), clearance (6 mil), and annular ring size. Export Gerber RS-274X files, NC drill files, IPC-D-356 netlists, and Pick-and-Place (centroid) CSVs for automated SMT assembly.
| Check Category | Critical Inspection Parameter | Pass Criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Schematic | Electrical Rule Check (ERC) | Zero unconnected input nets |
| Footprint | Pin 1 orientation & pad spacing | Matches component datasheet 1:1 |
| DFM Layout | Trace clearance & annular ring | ≥ 6 mil clearance, ≥ 4 mil ring |
| Deliverables | Gerber RS-274X & NC Drill export | Complete 100% layer set generated |
