What Does a PLC Do?
A PLC reads inputs from sensors (temperature, pressure, position, speed) and controls outputs (motors, valves, pumps, conveyors) based on a programmed logic. It operates in real-time, executing its program every few milliseconds. PLCs are designed to run 24/7 in harsh industrial environments with extreme temperatures, vibration, and electrical noise.
What Does SCADA Do?
SCADA collects data from PLCs, RTUs (Remote Terminal Units), and sensors across a plant and presents it on a visual dashboard called an HMI (Human-Machine Interface). When Does a Factory Need Both?
Most modern manufacturing plants need both. PLCs control the actual machines at the process level (closing valves, starting conveyors), while SCADA provides the supervisory layer — logging data, alerting operators to faults, and enabling management-level reporting. Think of PLCs as the "hands" and SCADA as the "eyes and brain" of a factory.
